Http://www.ergoticks.org is a collaborative online endeavor between two
people, one based in Calgary Canada (Pam Nicholls), the other based
in Kitakyushu, Japan (Patricia Reed). Ergoticks.org was generously
supported by Gallery Article, Montreal, Canada.

Espen Arseth- Aporia and Epiphany in Doom and The Speaking Clock- the
Temporality of Ergodic Art
 
"Ergoticks" is a hybridized from term (pilfered from physics) created for
this project.  Ergodics (original term) derives its meaning from a
cybernetic system which relates to a process in which a sequence of events
generates a different semiotic sequence each time it is engaged. This term
(Ergodics) extends into the realm of literature, where the principles of
randomness are introduced into the reading of a text. Ergodics obviously
has its place in online literature and how information is perceived since the
control of the sequence of events is decided by the user, and therefore
never experienced in the same way.
 
Q>How does the context in which a sequence of events takes place change
the interpretation of new information?

EXTRAPOLATION

 
1.       Fragmentation and Unity
opposing in nature, and currently at war concerning globalization
versus cultural homogeneity or cultural fragmentation. 
 
2.       The monitor as an osmotic membrane; as a giver and receiver of
information.  The information mutating as a result of the exterior
environment (ie. the actions of the user).  The monitor as a porous
device, not like a impenetrable wall and how actual walls are changing
architecturally to be more like a porous screen.  How is physical space                                  

altered by our virtual experiences?
 
3.       A celebration of the unknowable and nonlinear, an understanding that
our paths to all knowledge are not straight.  Our paths are forked, sometimes
circular and sometimes leading down a dead end, but that all paths are
essential.
 
4.       Allowing for equal partnerships between artists and audience.  Allowing
for the unpredictable, and increasing the chances for the unpredictable.
 
The launch of ergoticks.org is a beginning of a two year project which
will entail the amassing of narrative fragments/information which will then be
linked together, creating a space for inter-relationships between random
bits of data and text. With each weekly update the possibilities for
navigational/narrative experience grow exponentially, and new
relationships between diverse information fragments are established.
